Junior Rugby
The USC Junior rugby is made up of aged grade teams. Unlike other sports, it is based entirely on age and not skill level. Once you reach senior rugby, this changes to skill based teams. Read more about the rules for U6 to U12.
Our junior rugby club is made up of children (boys and girls) who attend local schools, including (but not limited to) the following: Chancellor primary, Sienna primary, Bright water primary, Buderim primary, Mooloolah primary, Glen view primary, Chevallum primary, Palmwoods primary, Woombye primary, Eudlo primary, St Joseph’s primary, Sun coast primary, Nambour Christian College, Mountain Creek State Primary, Mountain Creek State High School.
Junior rugby game times differ each week, as do the location of the rugby fields that you play on. Each rugby club has turns at hosting games, where all junior rugby club teams will play on the same day. This is to help with organising of canteens etc, it is much easier for a club to roster their canteen only once in a while rather than each week.
When you become part of a rugby team you will need to buy club shorts and socks, and have rugby boots (you are allowed metal studs and plastic studs, but metal ones need to be a maximum of 17mm in length). Mouth guards are recommended but not essential. Head gear and shoulder pads are worn by some players, but not all, again, it is optional. Rugby jerseys are provided by the club – please be prepared to take the team jersey’s home for washing when it is your rostered turn! There are also other club apparel items available for purchase, either at sign-on/registration day, via the apparel officer, or sometimes when USC rugby club is hosting a weekend round there will be an apparel table set up. Looking for second hand boots? Post your requirements on our Facebook page, likewise if your child has grown out of their old ones, why not consider on selling them via our Facebook page?
Each junior rugby team requires a coach and a manager. It would be great if you could become involved in your team, if you are prepared to take on either of these roles please let the committee know. You will need a blue card to be either a coach or a manager, this is an easy process, if you don’t have one we can supply you with the form and sign off on the application, submitting it on your behalf..
Like most sports, our junior rugby club encourages fair play, good sportsmanship, and building good team morale. We have codes of conduct for both players and spectators and enforce these where necessary. Generally our rugby teams have ‘Player of the Day’ or equivalent, which recognises our players for their efforts and builds their confidence. Joining a team at a young age is a great way for young children to get active, make new friends, and join a club where the whole family can participate in one way or another. We encourage our teams to come and watch the older teams, to build club spirit and let the younger players observe a higher level of rugby.

Under 12’s to Under 18’s
In Australia all U13 – U18 year olds play to modified laws designed to make the game safer and more enjoyable. These Australian U18 Law Variations continue the progression from the Kid’s Pathway (U6 – U12) through to junior representative opportunities at local club, school and regional levels.
In this age range the priority is to provide the players with opportunities to learn by trying it for themselves and the stages through this age range are stepped to allow for progressive development of every individual.
From U13 – U18 rugby games are intended to further develop the individual skills, fitness and team work of all players in accordance with their age and understanding of the game.
